Chelsea Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Speculation as '100%' Rumour
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled recent reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing speculation about his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract running until 2029, with a possible extension available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I don't pay attention because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Strain Following Previous Comments
Maresca's latest comments follow after he referred to a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled widespread speculation of a potential rift between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When asked if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would definitely remain at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: An 'Open Wound'
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that still cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter publicly, there has also been no resolution offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during these media briefings has become increasingly strained, raising concerns it could impact what has up to now been a decent start to the season.
Chelsea's on-field situation is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have qualified for the League Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable European position with strong performances in their remaining matches.
The prevailing question is whether this off-field situation might eventually affect a squad that was just starting to appear settled.
